Project1111

Lets tread on the earth lightly while we stomp rhythmically!

I am excited about the prospect of making dome covers. I'm also very interested in peoples ideas on the subject. Please let me know what you think, any other sewing/textile related ideas are welcome as well.

Also if anyone hears of any things sewing of fabric related that people are getting rid of or selling I would be interested in knowing about it, and if anyone needs help with there sewing machine or anything let me know and we'll see what we can do;)

I think the ideas you had at the meeting were great. We just have to start manifesting those materials. Also, we would have to decide specificallt what dome we would be making the first cover for so we know just how much material is needed. Guess what that means.....we need to build a new dome somewhere!!...oh or we could make one to fit kahlil's mom's dome, she'd love that....either way. Im so psyched!

I dont have very much experience on a machine but i would love to get more practice. Very interested in being able to make my own clothes and following a pattern. Maybe after christmas we could have a sewing party!

I think the small half sphere dome is a good place to start, its the smallest, most transportable, and its the one we use the most. Any one know if Joe has the measurements for the surface area?
Another thing to consider is if we want the covering to go over the outside or be stretched on the interior rings of the dome. I think it might look dope on the inside so the structure is visible.

do you mean the dome we put up this past weekend? im sure he does anyway...I was also thinking in the past if we got some kind of machine that could fasten on snaps like on boat coverings it would be a very quick and easy way to pop it on and off...

Ya thats what I was thinking. Some kind of straps that fasten to the metal rings on the inside to keep the covering taut. This would make the structure super wind resistant. Shit if we used a thick enough fabric and had a fire hole at the top we could even use it during winter. the only thing we would have to watch out for is that the covering fastens around the bottom ring of struts so that the rain doesn't pool up or leak in at the base.

Excellent......the best way to generate the measurements is by assembling one of each of the 2 triangular sizes
one of the Pentagon(5) one fifth and the other the Hexagon (1/6th)......

2: Make a patteren out of cardboard.....plot your 3 points using the measurements you acquired, draw your 3 lines with a perfect straight edge. Add extra material for sewing construction....or tabs if is is to be made out of a material you wish to heat or bond with an Adhesive. Accuracy and integrity of your craftsmanship will be rewarded in the final outcome!!!!

it is 14' dia......2V dome

here is the beauty of Bucky's Life Work www.desertdomes.com the dome calculator!!!!

I will be choosing some dates to begin the workshops,
to get an Idea of how many people are interested
please send me a message..

I'm thinking I can supply a staging ground for some workshops. Maybe even put one up before it snow.
